Myanmar
Thousands of people have fled across the border from Myanmar into Thailand as fierce fighting erupted between rebels and government forces, according to Thai officials. Thailand’s Khaosod newspaper said the violence broke out after the Karen National Liberation Army group attacked a border post operated by Myanmar’s army. Peaceful protests erupted in Myanmar after the military toppled a democratic government in February 2021. The anti-coup movement then morphed into an armed resistance after a brutal military crackdown killed more than 1,100 people.

Nigeria
At least 51 people have been killed in Nigeria after gunmen stormed a village, shooting people on sight and decapitating several. Though no motivation for the attack has been reported, clashes between settled farmers and nomadic animal herders, who compete for land and resources, are common in the Benue State region. Farmers accuse herders of destroying farmland by allowing their animals to graze on it, while herders say farmers kill their animals. Paul Hemba, a government official, told the AFP news agency that soldiers had been sent to the area to restore order.

Sudan
Security forces fired tear gas and and stun grenades at protesters in Sudan’s capital Khartoum today as hopes for a transition from military to civilian rule hit yet another roadblock. A scheduled signing of a new agreement between the army and pro-democracy groups yesterday was postponed for a second time and no new date for a signing was given. Demonstrations have been taking place almost constantly since a military coup in 2021 halted a promised transition to democracy following the toppling of longtime leader Omar al-Bashir in 2019. They are led by professional groups, including doctors, journalists, lawyers, teachers and engineers.
