Mexican journalist Alfredo Cardoso has died after being shot five times by a gang of hooded men who snatched him from his home. He becomes the second journalist to be murdered in Mexico in a week. The Reporters Without Borders group consistently ranks Mexico as one the world’s most dangerous places to be a journalist. More than 100 reporters have been murdered since 2000 and their killers often go unpunished.

Sudan
Pressure continues to pile on the leaders of Sudan’s military coup. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said they should “take heed” of huge anti-coup protests that took place on Saturday. “Time to go back to the legitimate constitutional arrangements,” he tweeted, referring to a transitional government made up of civilian and military leaders that was supposed to shepherd the country towards democratic elections in 2023. Soldiers shot three people dead at Saturday’s protests.

Covid
More than five million people across the world have now died from COVID-19, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University. The grim milestone comes as the World Health Organization warns the pandemic is far from over, pointing to rising cases in several countries. More than seven billion vaccine doses have been administered worldwide but, even as booster programs begin in rich countries, just 3.6 percent of people in low income countries have been vaccinated.
