Mexico’s Supreme Court has decriminalized abortion two years after it ruled it was not a crime in one state. That ruling kickstarted a process of decriminalizing abortion state by state but today’s ruling applies to the entire country meaning judges in states that have not decriminalized abortion will have to abide by the decision. Mexico now joins several countries across Latin America, including Colombia and Argentina, liberalizing reproductive laws in a trend referred to as “the green wave.”

DRC
East African leaders today agreed to extend the mandate of a regional military force that was sent into eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) last November after weeks of fierce fighting between the government and a resurgent rebel group. The East African Community force has occupied some areas that had been taken by the M23 rebel group but has failed to stop the conflict entirely. DRC has persistently accused neighboring Rwanda of supporting M23, something Rwanda denies.

India
Speculation that India is about to change its name to Bharat has mounted after Indian President Droupadi Murmu sent invitations for a dinner at the G20 summit in which she called herself "President of Bharat." Though, by convention, invitations issued by Indian constitutional bodies in Hindi use the name Bharat, the invitations were in English. It could, of course, just be a slip-up but some have found the timing of the incident interesting, as outlined in a very informative explainer from Reuters today.
