At least 51 people have been killed in an apparent revenge attack by an armed group in Mali. Locals said that gunmen on motorcycles rode into several villages shooting civilians indiscriminately. The attack came a week after the Malian army arrested two rebel leaders. No group has yet claimed responsibility but, as mentioned in previous newsletters, the western Sahel region is at the center of a conflict between the governments of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger and armed groups with links to al-Qaeda and ISIS. The conflict has pushed the region into humanitarian crisis.
