Mali-CAR
Wagner fighters are to stay put in African nations, including Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR), Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today. Honduras
Honduras has launched what appears to be a sweeping crackdown on inmates across its prison service after 46 women were massacred by rival gang members in a women’s prison last week. Photos published by the military police showed inmates at a male prison stripped to their shorts, sitting on the ground in tight rows with heads bowed on the man in front. Many saw the photos as an echo of similarly harsh measures introduced in neighboring El Salvador, which has also struggled to control violence in its prisons. The killings at the women’s prison sparked outrage across the country.

Guatemala
A presidential election in Guatemala will now go to a run-off after no candidate managed to secure the 50% plus one vote needed for outright victory. Left in the race are two broadly centre-left candidates, which means the country will have its first left wing leader in more than a decade. Frontrunner and former first lady, Sandra Torres, will now face-off against Bernardo Arevalo, who came in second in a shock result having previously polled in eighth place among the wide field of candidates.
