Madagascar
This is important. Famines are always man-made — most often, due to conflict. But the UN says that Madagascar is on the brink of history’s first wholly climate change-caused famine. "These are famine-like conditions and they're being driven by climate not conflict," the UN World Food Programme's Shelley Thakral told BBC. The UN says that at least half a million children under five are at risk of acute malnutrition. In some villages, people have begun eating locusts and cactus leaves to survive.

Tanzania
A gunman armed with two rifles today shot dead three police officers and a security guard near the French embassy in Tanzania’s capital Dar es Salaam. No motive has yet been confirmed but a police chief did mention neighboring Mozambique, where the Tanzanian military has intervened to support the government against a rebel group.

Horrible story out of India. A 24-year-old woman, who had accused an MP of rape, has died after setting herself on fire outside the Supreme Court in New Delhi. The woman had alleged that she was being harassed by the police for reporting the politician.
