Libya
Libyan authorities have detained about 4,000 migrants from other countries in what appears to be a sweeping crackdown. After the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, and in the midst of the chaos that followed, Libya became the main transit point for people attempting to reach Europe after fleeing poverty and violence in Africa and the Middle East. Human traffickers have exploited the situation, charging hefty sums to sneak people into Libya and send them across the Mediterranean on unsafe dinghies. Rights groups expressed immediate concern that the 4,000 people, who include women and children, may be at risk of abuse.

Taiwan-China
Taiwan scrambled fighter jets today after what it said was the biggest ever incursion of Chinese military aircraft into its airspace. The government said 39 Chinese planes, including two nuclear-capable bombers, were involved. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has been stepping up pressure for the island to submit to its sovereignty. Taiwan, which is backed by the US, says it will defend its independence.

Philippines
Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte today announced that he would retire from politics after presidential elections next year. Duterte, ineligible to run for a second term under the constitution, had been widely expected to run for vice president. The surprise announcement heightened speculation that his daughter, Sara Duterte-Carpio, is about to enter the race.
