Libya
Just days after the devastating earthquake in Morocco, another disaster has hit North Africa. At least 2,000 people are feared dead in Libya, according to authorities in the east of the country, after severe flooding. Ahmed Mismari, spokesperson for the Libyan National Army, said dams above the city of Derna had collapsed, "sweeping whole neighbourhoods with their residents into the sea." Officials in the east have appealed for international help and say the death toll is expected to rise.

Ethiopia
This is big. Ethiopia says that, after more than a decade of work, it has filled the reservoir at a gigantic dam it has been building on the Blue Nile river. The controversial megaproject has angered Egypt and other downstream countries who say they are reliant on Nile waters. Ethiopia is the source of the river but colonial-era treaties gave Egypt and Sudan access to the lion’s share of its waters. Egypt responded to the announcement by saying Ethiopia’s actions were “unilateral” and “illegal.”

Lebanon
A ceasefire has been declared after days of fighting in Lebanon’s biggest Palestinian refugee camp during which at least six people have been killed and dozens wounded. The clashes erupted in the Ein el-Hilweh camp near the city of Sidon last Thursday between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah group and Islamist armed groups. Several previous ceasefires have been broken after a matter of hours.
