Kuwait
Devastated families are mourning in the Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu after a fire at a residential building in Kuwait killed at least 50 people, 40 of them from India. Three Filipinos were also killed, according to officials in the Philippines. The fire broke out in a building that mostly houses expat workers in a country where foreign workers make up about two-thirds of the population. Migrant workers - mostly from Africa and Asia - flock to Gulf Arab states for work but many are mistreated and human rights groups have often criticised their poor living conditions. Al Jazeera today published a moving report from Kerala.

Argentina
Police fired teargas and rubber bullets at protesters outside Argentina’s Congress building today as, inside, lawmakers passed a mega bill that is central to President Javier Milei’s controversial economic reforms. Milei, who came to power in December, inherited a battered economy with inflation running at 300 percent. His agenda includes plans for privatizing public firms, granting special powers to the president and spurring investment. Critics say it will leave the public more exposed to rising unemployment and consumer prices.

Sudan
An interesting investigation from BBC today on how, despite a UN arms embargo, Iran and the UAE appear to be providing drones to the opposing sides in Sudan’s ongoing civil war - weapons that are proving particularly pivotal on the battlefield. The UAE is accused of siding with rebels, and Iran with the government. Sudan’s conflict, which has now entered its second year, erupted when the country’s military government fell out with its former allies in the powerful RSF militia. Numerous attempts at peace talks have collapsed.
