Kenya
Kenya is well used to protests and they have been common for decades. But local experts are saying that what happened today was something extraordinary. At least five protesters were shot dead, according to Reuters news agency, when demonstrators stormed parliament and set part of it on fire as MPs inside prepared to pass a tax bill that has sparked uproar across the country. It is likely the death toll will rise with paramedics reporting at least 50 people wounded.

Haiti
Sticking with Kenya, the country’s president, William Ruto, has held a ceremony to wish good luck to a contingent of Kenyan police officers who are about to depart to Haiti to help its government fight back criminal gangs who now control a staggering 80 percent of the capital Port-au-Prince. They’re just the first batch of what is expected to be a 1,000-strong force. Human rights activists have criticized the plan, arguing that the Kenyan police have a documented history of committing extra-judicial killings and torturing suspects. The killings of anti-tax law protesters in Nairobi today will amplify those concerns.

China
Big success for China as it continues to pursue its ambitions in space. Its Chang'e-6 lunar probe has returned to Earth after collecting the first ever samples taken from the Moon’s unexplored far side. China is the only country to have landed on the far side of the Moon, also doing so in 2019. Scientists hope the samples could answer key questions about how planets are formed.
