Israel-Palestine
As I’ve mentioned before, death tolls can be hard to communicate in news. The numbers, especially as they spiral, seem somehow abstract. It’s hard to understand their scale and the stories - the life stories - of those behind the figures are lost. Al Jazeera, though, today published a remarkable piece of journalism. It visualizes the numbers out of Gaza to give an idea of their scale and it also tells the stories of some of the people who’ve been killed. It includes a video that simply features the names and ages of the dead, as documented by the Gaza health ministry, scrolling quickly up the screen. The video is more than five minutes long. That alone tells an awful story.

Zimbabwe
A Zimbabwean opposition MP says he was kidnapped, tortured, injected with an unknown substance and left naked in the bush. Takudzwa Ngadziore, 25, posted a video on Facebook which showed a man with a gun he said was chasing him. It comes a month after a former opposition MP, James Chidhakwa, also said he was abducted and tortured by unknown assailants. Opposition and human rights activists have been kidnapped in Zimbabwe before. Police say they have yet to receive a report from Ngadziore or his party, and the ruling Zanu-PF party says the abductions are staged.
