Israel-Palestine
Reports are starting to come in that an Israeli offer of a two-month ceasefire in Gaza is on the table. US website Axios first reported the news, citing unnamed Israeli officials, and said the ceasefire would be offered in exchange for the release of all remaining Israeli hostages. After the two-month period, during which some Palestinian prisoners would also be freed by Israel, the war on Gaza would resume. The Associated Press news agency reported, citing an unamed Egyptian official, that the deal would also offer the most senior Hamas leaders the opportunity to leave the Palestinian enclave. Hamas has rejected the offer to leave, the AP reported, and is insisting on a permanent ceasefire before it releases any hostages.

Iran
Iran today executed a man who had been sentenced to death for his role in massive anti-government protests that swept the country in 2022. Mohammad Ghobadlou, 23, was convicted of murder and "corruption on Earth," a common charge in Iran, for allegedly mowing down a policeman with his car at a demo in Tehran. Last-minute pleas for clemency were ignored, as were appeals to take a mental health condition into account. He becomes the ninth person to be executed in connection with the protests. BBC Persian reported that a woman, identified as Ghobadlou’s mother or aunt, could be heard shouting outside the prison gates just after he was executed: "You killed my Mohammed. He took to the streets for all of the young people."

North Korea
North Korea has reportedly torn down a major and long-standing monument symbolizing the aspiration to unify with South Korea on the orders of leader Kim Jong Un. The decision to destroy the arch, which was erected in 2000, comes after Kim made a speech in which he called the South a "primary foe," said reunification was no longer possible, and slammed the monument as an “eyesore.” After some diplomatic softening in 2018, relations between the Koreas have sharply deteriorated again.
