Israel-Palestine
The death toll from Israel’s pounding of the Gaza strip has now exceeded 3,000, according to the Palestinian health ministry, and more than one third of the dead are believed to be children. The ministry said that 12,500 people have been wounded. The humanitarian situation - which the UN has called a “catastrophe” - is deteriorating with water, food, fuel, power and supplies of medicine dwindling. The Washington Post today reported that staff at Gaza City’s largest hospital were reduced to drinking water from IV solution bags. Israel has denied that there is a humanitarian crisis.

India
India’s Supreme Court today rejected an appeal to legalize same-sex marriage, saying the decision should rest with parliament, in a setback for LGBTQ+ campaigners in the country. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, though, said the government should uphold the rights of the LGBTQ+ community and work to end discrimination. Campaigners have won more rights for gay people in India over the last decade and most of the gains had come via the Supreme Court. In 2018, the court struck down a colonial-era law that had made gay sex punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
