Israel-Palestine
Israeli soldiers today killed 9 Palestinians, including a 61-year-old woman, in a raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank — the deadliest incident in the Palestinian enclave for 20 years. Palestinian officials said the woman was one of two civilians killed and that the other seven were members of armed groups. Israel has been carrying out near-daily raids on the camp and other parts of the West Bank in what it says is an operation to root out militants planning attacks on Israelis. A staggering 170 Palestinians were killed in such raids in 2022, many of them civilians.

DR Congo
Despite a November truce, violence seems to be escalating in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). M23 had been inactive for years but launched a fresh offensive several months ago after saying the government reneged on a deal to integrate its fighters into the national army. Regional analysts are increasingly worried that the situation could lead to conflict between DRC and Rwanda.

Peru
The political crisis in Peru deepened today as a group of MPs submitted a motion to impeach President Dina Boluarte, who has been in power for just over a month. Boluarte, who had been vice president, came to power after the previous president, Pedro Castillo, was arrested and charged with rebellion after trying to dissolve congress. Since his arrest, Peru has been rocked by protests during which more than 40 people have been killed. Boluarte is the country’s sixth president in six years.
