The violence in the occupied East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah, mentioned in a previous newsletter, is getting worse and finally drawing international attention.
From Al Jazeera:
“Tensions have escalated in Jerusalem, the occupied West Bank and Gaza throughout the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, amid growing anger about potential forced expulsions of Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah, on land claimed by illegal Jewish settlers.”
The UN Security Council will meet on Monday to discuss the situation.

Afghanistan
Terrible, terrible story out of Afghanistan and, because it’s Afghanistan, it really isn’t getting the attention it should be. At least 50 people — most of them girls between the ages of 11 and 15 — have been killed in a bomb attack on a girls’ school in Kabul.

Italy
The summer is here and with it comes a spike in the number of people risking their lives by crossing the Mediterranean in rickety vessels trying to reach Europe. More than 1,000 people landed on the Italian island of Lampedusa today.
