Iraq
Perhaps an odd choice for some, but I’m going to list the death of former US defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld as an Iraq story. His enduring legacy will be the disastrous US invasion of that country, which led to by some estimates the deaths of one million Iraqis. Iraq has still not recovered and, for many people around the world, Rumsfeld will be remembered as a war criminal who never faced trial.

Myanmar
The military junta in Myanmar says it has begun the process of releasing about 2,300 people who were imprisoned for their part in protests that erupted after the army overthrew a democratically-elected government in February and jailed its leaders. Some 5,224 people were imprisoned, though, according to a local monitoring group. The move was met sceptically by opposition groups who said the military wanted to ease international pressure and curry favor with a public that has turned against it.

Yemen
A disturbing one out of Yemen. Rights groups say a model has been arrested by rebel authorities, accused of indecency and prostitution over her modelling photos. Intisar al-Hammadi’s lawyer says she has been assaulted in custody, forced to sign a confession blindfolded and racially abused because she has an Ethiopian mother.
