ISIS fighters have attacked an Iraqi army outpost in the northern region of Kirkuk, killing two military officers and wounding three soldiers. The Iraqi military has recently launched an operation aimed at rooting out ISIS sleeper cells in areas along the country’s borders. The attack is a reminder that, while it has been largely destroyed and pushed out of the vast amounts of territory it once controlled, the group retains the ability to launch hit-and-run attacks in both Iraq and Syria.

Colombia
It’s one of the most remarkable stories in recent memory. And, today, Colombian authorities said four children who survived 40 days alone in the Amazon jungle after a plane crash are doing well. Officials said the children - who come from an Indigenous community and are aged 13, 9, 4, and 1 - stayed alive by eating seeds, roots and plants they knew were edible. “The survival of the children is a sign of the knowledge and relationship with the natural environment that is taught starting in the mother’s womb,” the National Organization of Indigenous Peoples of Colombia said.

Kenya
Romania has apologized and said it is recalling its ambassador to Kenya after he made wildy racist remarks during a meeting at a United Nations office in Nairobi. Dragos Tigau is reported to have said “the African group has joined us" when he saw a monkey outside the window. An official from the Kenyan foreign ministery, Macharia Kamau, first made the comment public in a Twitter post and alleged that an attempt had been made to cover it up. In a statement, Romania’s foreign ministry said it hoped the incident would not impact its relationships with African countries.
