Afghanistan
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has replaced his defence and interior ministers - key security positions - as the Taliban continues to capture territory as part of a sustained advance. Peace talks between the two sides have stuttered and, since the announcement in May that US and NATO forces would withdraw by September, violence has surged across the country.

Guinea
A bullet (largely) dodged as Guinea has managed to shut down an Ebola outbreak that killed 12 people, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The worst Ebola outbreak in history, which killed more than 11,000 people in West Africa from 2014 to 2016, also originated in Guinea. WHO said lessons learned during that outbreak meant that authorities could react swiftly to stop this one from spreading.
