At least 27 people have been killed as heavy rains battered the southern Indian state of Kerala. The downpours have triggered landslides, flooded roads and forced thousands of people to take shelter at temporary relief camps. Rescue attempts are ongoing and local media reports say that several people, including children, are still missing.

Sudan
Hundreds of people have taken to the streets of Sudan’s capital Khartoum calling for the military to overthrow the country’s transitional government. Political tension has remained high since former dictator Omar al-Bashir was overthrown by the army following mass protests in 2019. Critics of today’s demonstration alleged it was orchestrated by members of the security forces, sympathetic to the toppled regime.

An Iranian navy ship today opened fire on and chased away five pirate ships that were attempting to commandeer two Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Aden.
