At least one protester is reported to have been killed as thousands of Indian farmers resumed an attempt to march on the country’s capital Delhi. Police today fired tear gas at the farmers, who are demanding higher guaranteed prices for their crops, as they tried to move towards the city’s borders where barriers have been set up to prevent them entering. The government must tread carefully, though. An election is coming up and farmers form an influential voting bloc.

Sometimes a long and deeply reported piece of journalism is what encapsulates a big story. But, often, it’s a small moment. BBC today published a video that, while just 36 seconds long, broke my heart. A little girl in Gaza, Mariam, is asked what she lacks. “Everything,” she says, breaking down. And then: “I miss bread.” The UN’s World Food Programme yesterday said it had suspended deliveries of food aid, already woefully inadequate, to northern Gaza because its aid convoys had endured "complete chaos and violence due to the collapse of civil order."

DR Congo
The UN Security Council today sanctioned senior leaders of six armed groups operating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), including the resurgent M23 militia, as violence spirals in the region. DRC’s government, the US, the UN and others accuse neighboring Rwanda of supporting the M23, which is threatening to capture the east’s biggest city. Rwanda denies any involvement.
