Haiti
Gunmen today attempted to assassinate Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry, according to officials. An assassination attempt on a world leader is extraordinary by any measure, but especially so in Haiti given its then president, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated in July. The circumstances around that killing, carried out by a group of mercenaries, remain murky but the country has been in chaos ever since.

South Africa
A blaze that destroyed the South African parliament’s main chamber on Sunday reignited today. Authorities had previously said the fire was over, and that a damage assessment and clean-up operation was underway. A man has been arrested, according to police, and will be charged with housebreaking, theft and arson.

Nigeria
Longtime Proximities readers will be aware of Nigeria’s kidnap-for-ransom crisis. Today, rare good news. Twenty-one children were rescued hours after being abducted by an armed group in the northwest, an unstable area where the crisis is centered. The region has been plagued by gangs, known locally as bandits, kidnapping schoolchildren and students for ransom. Despite repeated government promises to get the situation under control, the gangs appear to be growing in strength.
