Chaos and shock in Haiti after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. A gun battle raged in capital Port-au-Prince as police confronted the heavily-armed attackers, warning residents to stay indoors. Police chief Léon Charles said four suspects were shot dead, two were captured and several others remained at large. The gunmen briefly held three police officers hostage before releasing them, according to local reports. Beyond describing them as foreign mercenaries, officials have given no details of who the attackers were or what their motive might have been.

South Africa
Former South African President Jacob Zuma has begun a 15-month prison sentence for failing to attend a judicial commission investigating allegations of corruption during his time in office. Rights groups welcomed the imprisonment as an important sign of government respect for due process. “Former President Zuma handing himself over goes a long way in showing that no one is above the law in South Africa,” Shenilla Mohamed, executive director of Amnesty South Africa, said in a statement.

Colombia
A regional human rights body has condemned Colombian authorities for what it called a disproportionate response to months of anti-government street protests. Demonstrations began in April over a now shelved tax reform bill but continued as they broadened out to include other issues such as poverty and corruption. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights accused security forces of using lethal force and of engaging in gender-based and sexual violence.
