Haiti
“One thing after another,” the Pope tweeted today as the death toll from a fuel truck explosion in Haiti reached 75. He’s not wrong. Haiti has lurched from one crisis to the next over the last few months, from the assassination of its president to the activities of all-powerful criminal gangs. Some of those gangs blockaded fuel terminals earlier this year, exacerbating an already biting fuel shortage. When the fuel truck crashed on Tuesday, people rushed towards it, wanting to collect some gas; a final act of desperation that led to their deaths when the tanker exploded.

Iran
A glimmer of hope in the stuttering nuclear talks between Iran and world powers? Tehran today agreed to grant global nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, access to a centrifuge parts manufacturing facility to replace cameras that were destroyed last June in an act of sabotage on the plant, blamed on Israel. Iran and the other signatories to a 2015 nuclear accord have been trying to put the deal, torn up by Donald Trump, back together, but are locked in a game of who-will-blink-first. The world powers want Iran to stop expanding its nuclear program immediately, while Iran wants sanctions against it, even those unrelated to nuclear activity, lifted.

Ethiopia
Ethiopia appears to have arrested yet more journalists. The Associated Press said today that Amir Aman Kiyaro, a freelancer for the news agency, had been detained in the capital Addis Ababa after returning from a reporting trip. He has not been charged with any offence. State media, however, reported that he was accused of “serving the purposes” of a “terrorist” group by interviewing it. The report said two other journalists, Thomas Engida and Addisu Muluneh, were also detained.
