Haiti
Violence erupted today outside the funeral of assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. Shots rang out as protesters clashed with police and tear gas wafted into the ceremony itself. Some 26 suspects have been arrested for the murder, including 18 former Colombian soldiers, but claim and counterclaim abound over who was behind the attack. A prime minister, Ariel Henry, has been sworn in what has been widely seen as an attempt to prevent a power struggle in the wake of Moïse’s death.

Germany, Belgium, China, the US. A rash of recent destructive floods around the world has experts pointing out that they highlight the urgent need to meaningfully address climate change. India is the latest country to suffer with at least 112 people dead in flooding and landslides caused by heavy rainfall. Many people are still missing.

Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone today abolished the death penalty in a unanimous vote by parliamentarians. It becomes the 23rd African country to do so amid campaigns by local rights groups. Activists had said the death penalty was an inhumane hangover of colonialism and, though it had been two decades since an execution was carried out, death sentences were still handed down and 99 people were on death row.
