Haiti
“The organizations that are here are doing what they can, but we need more supplies. Food, clean water and shelter are needed most, and we need them fast.”
Buried under the coverage of Afghanistan, misery was heaped upon misery in Haiti today. Tropical Storm Grace forced a halt to rescue operations after a huge earthquake on Saturday. The death toll has since climbed to 1,419 with at least 6,000 injured. Frustration is growing with thousands of people left homeless, thousands short on food and thousands waiting for urgent medical treatment. Haiti was already in crisis following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse last month.

Afghanistan
Day two of Taliban rule in Afghanistan and an extraordinary sight: the group held a live press conference for local and international media. Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, in response to a question from a female reporter, said that women’s rights would be respected “within the framework” of the group’s ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam. Separately, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price did not rule out formally recognizing the Taliban as Afghanistan’s government.

Uganda
Uganda’s constitutional court today scrapped a hugely controversial anti-pornography law that included a ban on wearing miniskirts in public. The ruling is being seen as a significant victory for women’s rights campaigners who said the law was being used to maliciously target women, including through revenge porn and extortion.
