Guinea
At least seven people have been killed and 32 wounded as anti-government protests continue in Guinea’s capital Conakry and other cities. Opposition parties and civil society groups, who organized the demonstrations, said the seven dead were shot and that the 32 wounded were suffering gunshot wounds. The military seized power in a coup in 2021 and protesters are angry that it’s been dragging its feet on a promise to hold democratic elections. The opposition said the protests would continue.

Today marks one year since the much-loved Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot dead by Israeli forces. Despite multiple investigations that indicate she was deliberately killed, nobody has been held accountable. Her family pledged today that they would keep fighting for justice, including at the International Criminal Court. “We miss Shireen every moment of every day. We wake up every morning hoping that we’ll finally wake up from this nightmare. We love you Shireen,” they said in a statement. Al Jazeera today published a remembrance of her life and career.

Mozambique
A man has been arrested in central Mozambique for being in possession of another man’s dismembered head and genitals, according to police. The suspect later admitted to killing and decapitating three other people, police spokesperson Dércio Chacate said. Body parts, often of Albino people, are used by traditional so-called healers who wrongly believe they can cure illnesses, and bring good luck and wealth.
