Ethiopia
The Washington Post today published a damning and important investigation on Ethiopia. The Post found that, even as a much-heralded peace deal was on the table, Eritrean troops killed hundreds of people in Ethiopia’s Tigray region in a particularly brutal massacre. A toddler was killed with his 7-year-old brother and their mother, elderly priests were shot in their homes, and a nursing mother was shot dead in front of her young sons, the investigation found. After two years of war, the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front signed a truce in November. Soldiers from neighboring Eritrea were fighting alongside the Ethiopian government.

Somaliland
A conflict has erupted in Somalia’s northern breakaway region of Somaliland and it’s one of the most under-reported in the world. Today, Qatar, Somalia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States released a joint statement calling on all parties to the fighting to work towards peace. Somaliland unilaterally declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and, unlike Somalia, has been relatively stable since. In early February, though, the governors of three Somaliland provinces said they wanted to rejoin Somalia and violence erupted. At least 34 people have been killed in the fighting so far, according to local doctors.

Peru
A food delivery driver in Peru has been arrested after police found a mummified human in the cooler bag he used to make deliveries. The mummy was between 600 - 800 years old and 26-year-old Julio Cesar Bermejo said his father brought it home three decades ago. The mummy is now in the possession of the culture ministry who have deemed it a national cultural asset. Bermejo told local reporters that "Juanita” was his “spiritual girlfriend. “At home, she’s in my room. She sleeps with me. I take care of her,” he said in footage that quickly went viral on Peruvian social media. The culture ministry, though, said the pre-Hispanic relic was a “mummified adult male” of about 45 years old. “It’s not a Juanita, it’s a Juan,” a specialist at the ministry said.
