At least 45 civilians, including a pregnant woman, were massacred by Ethiopian troops in door-to-door attacks, the country’s human rights watchdog has said. The attacks took place in the Amhara region in late January, according to the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, which added that while it had the confirmed the identities of 45 people, the number killed was likely higher. The military is currently battling a local militia, the Fano, which is referred to as a “self defence” group for the region. It was until recently allied with the central government in Addis Ababa.

Al Jazeera today reported that two of its staff in Gaza’s Rafah city, correspondent Ismail Abu Omar and photojournalist Ahmad Matar, were badly wounded in what the network said was an Israeli drone strike. Disturbing footage of the aftermath showed the men, both wearing press vests, writhing on the ground covered in blood. Doctors amputated Abu Omar’s right leg and, at the time of writing, he was reported to still have shrapnel lodged in his head and chest, and was undergoing surgery. In a statement, the Doha-based network said that Israel had “deliberately” targeted the journalists in order to stop them reporting. A staggering 85 media workers have been killed covering the Gaza war, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
