Ethiopia
Top Ethiopian opposition figure Bate Urgessa has been shot dead and his body dumped on the side of a road in the country’s Oromia region, according to local reports. Bate’s family told the Addis Standard news site that men who "looked like government security forces" had taken him from a hotel room. Government officials denied security forces were involved. Bate, a senior official of the Oromo Liberation Front, had been jailed several times, including in February while he was in the middle of an interview with a French journalist. The Oromo ethnic group is the biggest in Ethiopia but several of its leaders say Oromos are sidelined and discriminated against by the country’s longstanding elites.

Israel-Palestine
Three sons and four grandchildren of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh were killed in an Israeli strike on a vehicle they were travelling in. Israel admitted carrying out the attack, saying Haniyeh’s sons were members of Hamas’s military wing. Haniyeh, in footage that went viral, was caught on camera as he received the news while visiting wounded Palestinians at a hospital in Qatar’s capital Doha. “There is no doubt that this criminal enemy is driven by the spirit of revenge and the spirit of murder and bloodshed, and it does not observe any standards or laws,” he later said. The incident come as ceasefire talks continue in Egypt. Haniyeh said the killings would not change Hamas’s position.
