Ethiopia
US President Joe Biden today signed an executive order authorizing sanctions against all parties to the war in Ethiopia, though no person or group was immediately sanctioned. Biden said that individuals or groups, including the Ethiopian government, could be sanctioned for prolonging the conflict, preventing a ceasefire, or obstructing humanitarian aid. The US government aid agency USAID says up to 900,000 people are living in famine conditions in Tigray, the center of the conflict, and that Ethiopian authorities are delaying and preventing the delivery of aid.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen today proudly admitted that he had crashed the Zoom calls of opposition leaders to warn them that he and the country’s intelligence services were keeping an eye on them. Hun Sen revealed himself in a call on September 9 and spent about 12 minutes talking with Long Ry, a former opposition MP. But the prime minister said he had also sat silently in about 20 previous calls. Entering Zoom calls uninvited, known as “Zoom-bombing”, was a popular prank as the video conferencing software took off at the beginning of the pandemic.

The man who discovered the Ebola virus, Congolese professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe, today said he believes it has been defeated thanks to vaccines and more effective clinical treatments. "For 40 years I have been a witness and a player in the fight against this terrifying and deadly disease and I can say today: it is defeated, it is preventable and curable," he said. "I'm the happiest of Congolese people."
