Ecuador
Another huge prison fight in Ecuador. This time, at least 68 people were killed as inmates from rival gangs battled with guns and explosives in the same prison where more than 100 prisoners were killed in a similar riot in September. The violence underscores a growing problem the country has with gangs linked to international drug gangs such as Mexico’s Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels. President Guillermo Lasso declared a state of emergency last month to tackle spiralling crime.

Sudan
At least five people were killed, activist groups say, as protests against a military coup continued in Sudan’s capital Khartoum. The pro-democracy Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors said that four people were shot dead and that one died from inhaling tear gas. Police denied using live ammunition and said they had used “minimal force.” The violence came just days after coup leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan named himself head of a new military-led governing council.

India
Schools in India’s capital New Delhi are to be closed for a week to protect children from dangerous levels of toxic smog. The Supreme Court has even suggested a “pollution lockdown” for the city of more than 20 million, one of the most polluted in the world. Delhi authorities said they would consider the court’s recommendation.
