DR Congo
We’ve mentioned the escalating conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Proximities several times recently. It seems it’s getting worse. According to a group of aid agencies, one million people have fled their homes in the last three months as the M23 rebel group advances on the east’s biggest city, Goma. Guinea
Guinea’s military rulers have abruptly dissolved the country’s government with no explanation. General Amara Camara, whose administration came to power in a coup in 2021, gave a video address on State TV in which he said a new government would be appointed without giving any timeline. Government ministers were ordered to surrender their passports and official vehicles, their bank accounts were frozen, and Guinea’s borders were sealed. There has been a slew of coups in West and Central Africa in recent years. In addition to Guinea, governments have been overthrown in Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Gabon.
