Colombia’s President Iván Duque has said a helicopter carrying him and several other senior politicians, including the defense and interior ministers, was hit by gunfire as it flew over a region near the border with Venezuela. The presidency released several images of what appeared to be bullet holes in the aircraft and Duque said in a video message that security forces were under orders to track down the perpetrators. Nobody has yet claimed responsibility but several armed groups operate in the area.

Ethiopia
Up to 900,000 people in Ethiopia’s conflict-hit Tigray region are facing famine conditions, according to the US agency for international development. That staggering estimate comes less than a month after a UN analysis found that 350,000 people were already living in famine conditions. Aid agencies have for months been pleading with Ethiopian authorities to grant them full access to the region but the government has refused and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has denied there is a major hunger problem.

Police in Istanbul today fired tear gas and rubber bullets at crowds attempting to take part in an annual Pride parade. Hundreds of marchers, who showed up despite the procession being denied a permit, were met by battalions of officers in riot gear.
