Colombia
The protests in Colombia have been mentioned in previous newsletters and they have proven extraordinarily resilient. What started as a movement against a proposed tax bill back in April morphed into demonstrations over a whole host of issues. Now, President Ivan Duque has deployed the military to the city of Cali. At least 49 people are reported to have died in the protests so far. This is one to keep an eye on.

DR Congo
The Mount Nyiragongo volcano in DR Congo, the third most active in the world, erupted last week (as covered in a previous newsletter). Dozens of people were killed and thousands of homes destroyed. Thousands more people are now in urgent need of food aid after fleeing the city of Goma, fearing a second eruption. Powerful tremors were felt in the area today, increasing worries another eruption is imminent.
Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb is reporting from the city.
