China today celebrated the centenary of the Chinese Communist Party with an impressive display of pomp and ceremony in Beijing. President Xi Jinping had some strong words that will raise eyebrows in Western capitals. “We will never allow anyone to bully, oppress or subjugate China … Anyone who dares try to do that will have their heads bashed bloody against the Great Wall of Steel forged by over 1.4 billion Chinese people," Xi said as part of a wide-ranging speech that lasted an hour.

Libya
The Libyan coastguard has been caught on camera firing on a small and overcrowded migrant boat and circling it so close at speed that it nearly collided with it several times. Sea-Watch, the non-profit rescue group that filmed the incident, slammed the coastguard and said the EU should stop cooperating with it. Almost 15,000 migrants have been intercepted by the Libyan coastguard and returned to Libya so far this year.

Ethiopia
A bridge that aid groups say is key for getting emergency food aid into Ethiopia’s conflict-hit Tigray region has been destroyed, the aid groups have said. About 900,000 people in the region are living in famine conditions, according to the US Agency for International Development, and experts say time is running out to reach them.
