Chad
Chad’s military leader Mahamat Deby has handily won a presidential election, according to provisional results. Deby secured more than 61% of the vote with his main rival, Prime Minister Succes Masra, coming in at 18.5%. Masra, though, immediately contested the figures and indicated he would not accept the result. Deby was installed as president by the military after his father, President Idriss Deby, was shot dead while fighting rebels in 2021. His apparent victory ensures the family’s 34-year rule of the central African country will continue.

Mozambique
One to watch. Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi has said the country’s army is battling Islamist insurgents who have launched a massive attack on the northern town of Macomia. Hundreds of rebel fighters are involved in the assault, according to the Reuters news agency. ISIS-linked rebels launched an insurgency in the country’s gas-rich Cabo Delgado province in 2017. Despite a major counter-offensive from the military, insurgent attacks have surged since January.

Israel-Palestine
The head of the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, said it has been forced to close its headquarters in East Jerusalem after an arson attack by Israeli locals. Philippe Lazzarini said the incident was the second in less than a week. The agency’s Adam Bouloukos said that as he and colleagues attempted to put out the fire a crowd of about 100 people watched on clapping and cheering. The Israeli government says UNWRA is allied with Hamas, which the UN denies.
