Canary Islands
A woman has been found clinging to a sinking dinghy in the Mediterranean, the sole survivor of a capsizing reported to have killed 52 people. The boat was found by a passing ship about 220km off Spain’s Canary Islands, which were the intended destination. Such incidents are common between the coast of West Africa and the Canaries but they are difficult to verify. At least 250 people died on the route in the first six months of 2021, according to the UN. But one migrant rights group, Walking Borders, says there have been more than 2,000 deaths over the same period.

Ethiopia
"This shortage is not because food is unavailable, but because the Ethiopian government is obstructing humanitarian aid and personnel, including land convoys and air access."
The US has accused the Ethiopian government of obstructing the delivery of food aid to its war-ravaged Tigray region - the latest in a long line of such accusations, which have come largely from aid groups and UN agencies. The Ethiopian government denied it was deliberately blocking the aid but said security also needed to be considered. Hundreds of thousands are believed to be on the brink of starvation.
