Burkina Faso
At least 14 soldiers were killed and seven wounded in an attack on a military barracks in Burkina Faso, according to the government. As mentioned in several previous newsletters, the western Sahel region has for years been the epicenter of a conflict between the governments of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger and armed groups with links to al-Qaeda and ISIS. The violence appears to have spiralled in recent months.

Libya
Legislative elections in Libya, aimed at bringing a measure of peace to a country ruined by more than a decade of instability, have been postponed until January. An announcement in June that a timetable for legislative and presidential polls had been agreed by rival administrations - one in the east and one in the west - had brought some hope but squabbles since then have underlined what a mammoth task bringing the two sides together will be. Libya has been beset by conflict and chaos since longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011.

Israel-Palestine
Mohammad al-Ardah, one of six Palestinians who escaped from a high-security Israeli prison last month before being rearrested, has gone on hunger strike. Al-Ardah’s lawyer said he is protesting harsh punitive measure taken since his recapture.
