Hundreds of thousands of people have flooded the streets of Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires to protest education spending cuts. President Javier Milei, elected in December, moved fast to introduce cuts to public spending after his victory, closing ministries, laying off government employees and cutting subsidies in what he says is an effort to right a struggling economy. Argentina’s education system is generally considered one of the best in the region and public universities are free. Milei, though, has called them bastions of socialism.

Iran
Popular Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi has been sentenced to death for supporting anti-government protests in 2022, according to his lawyer. The 33-year-old in his songs backed demonstrators when mass protests erupted over the death of a young woman in the custody of the so-called morality police after she allegedly wore her hijab improperly. His lawyer, Amir Raesian, said he would appeal.

Israel-Palestine
Gaza could descend into full-blown famine within six weeks, according to a UN World Food Programme (WFP) official. "We are getting closer by the day to a famine situation," said Gian Caro Cirri, Geneva director of the WFP. "There is reasonable evidence that all three famine thresholds -- food insecurity, malnutrition and mortality -- will be passed in the next six weeks."
