Afghanistan
They were queuing knee-deep in a filthy sewage canal. Thousands of desperate people, some waiting for days in the sweltering heat, hoping to get on flights out of Afghanistan. Tonight, scores of them lie dead, including children, after a suicide bomber detonated an explosives belt among them, one of two explosions at Kabul airport. Thirteen American marines were also killed, prompting President Joe Biden to promise retribution. The US military says its evacuation mission will continue.

Qatar
Amnesty International has accused Qatar, currently engaged in huge construction projects ahead of hosting the World Cup next year, of failing to properly investigate the deaths of migrants hired to work on building stadiums and other infrastructure. The rights group said in a report that there was “evidence of links between premature deaths and unsafe working conditions”. Qatar rejected the report’s findings.

Ethiopia
The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, a government-run body, has alleged that the rebel Oromo Liberation Army was behind a massacre that killed 150 people earlier this month. The OLA called the allegations “a gross distortion of facts on the ground.”
