Afghanistan
The head of the World Food Programme, David Beasley, today told the BBC that Afghanistan is facing the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. “It is as bad as you could possibly imagine,” he said. "Ninety-five percent of the people don't have enough food, and now we're looking at 23 million people marching towards starvation. The next six months are going to be catastrophic. It is going to be hell on Earth."

DR Congo
Hundreds of people have fled after gunmen seized two towns in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Local officials blamed the attack on the M23 rebel group, which is a surprise, as the group was forced across the border into remote parts of Uganda and Rwanda after holding territory for some time in 2012 and 2013. The UN has accused Uganda and Rwanda of supporting the group, which both countries deny.

China
An intriguing one out of China. Satellite images appear to show mocked-up versions of a US Navy aircraft carrier and destroyer sitting on train tracks in the country’s northwestern desert, prompting speculation that the Chinese military is using them for practice. When asked about the images at a news conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said he was unaware of them.
